10 Heart Tests Your Doctor Might Order, and What They Mean

 Patients with heart disease and those suspected of having heart disease are frequently subjected to a battery of testing. Find out what to anticipate if you're scheduled for one of these noninvasive heart exams.

2. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE): Makes detailed photographs of your heart and the arteries that lead to and from it using high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound). The sound-producing echo transducer for TEE is attached to a small tube that travels through your mouth, down your neck, and into your oesophagus, which is extremely close to the heart's upper chambers.

3.Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG): Provides two types of information by measuring the electrical activity of the heartbeat. First, a doctor can determine how long the electrical wave takes to move through your heart by measuring time intervals on the ECG. The length of time it takes a wave to go from one portion of the heart to the next indicates if the electrical activity is normal, slow, fast, or irregular.

Second, a cardiologist may be able to determine whether sections of your heart are too large or overworked by evaluating the amount of electrical activity travelling through your heart muscle.

Determine if you've had a heart attack.

Assist in predicting the onset of a heart attack.


4. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): Creates detailed images of organs and structures inside your body using a magnetic field and radiofrequency radiation. It can be used to evaluate your heart and blood vessels, as well as identify stroke-affected parts of the brain.

Examine the heart's structure.

Examine the cardiac muscle for scar tissue.

Evaluate the heart valves' performance.


5. CT scan: A computer-assisted X-ray imaging procedure that produces cross-sectional images of your heart. It's also known as cardiac computed tomography, computerised axial tomography, or CAT scan, and it's used to look for issues in your heart and blood arteries. It's also utilised to see if any of the brain's blood arteries have been damaged by a stroke.

6. Exercise tolerance test (ETT), determines whether your heart's blood supply is enough and your heart rhythm is normal when exercising on a treadmill or stationary bicycle. While exercising, the test measures your weariness, heart rate, respiration, blood pressure, and cardiac activity. This test can be done alongside nuclear imaging or echocardiography.

7. Pharmacologic stress test: Medication is injected into your arm through an IV line to widen the arteries, increasing your heart rate and blood flow in a similar way to exercise. This test can be used in conjunction with nuclear imaging, echocardiography, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).


The following are the reasons for the test:


Find out what is causing your chest pain, shortness of breath, and weakness.

During activity, look for signs of poor blood flow to the heart muscle.

Blockages in the coronary arteries should be monitored or diagnosed.

Evaluate your chances of having a heart attack.


8. Tilt test: This is a common way to figure out why you're dizzy or lightheaded. You will be lying on a table that is steadily tilted upward during the test. The test determines how your blood pressure and heart rate react to gravity. Blood pressure and heart rate (pulse) are monitored by a nurse or technician throughout the test to see how they change.

Examine any dizziness or fainting spells you're experiencing.

Changes in cardiac rhythm should be noted.


9. Ambulatory rhythm monitoring tests: Holter monitoring, event recorders, and mobile cardiac telemetry (MCT) are ambulatory monitoring procedures that are done on an outpatient basis to examine your heart rhythm for a long time.


The tests are being conducted for the following reasons:

Look for signs of intermittent heart rhythm issues that aren't visible on a routine ECG.


10. Coronary angiogram: An X-ray procedure that examines the coronary arteries that provide blood to the heart. A catheter is put into a blood vessel in your arm or groyne and connected to your heart and coronary arteries. The catheter is subsequently infused with a special dye, and photographs are taken.
